The South African rand rallied on Friday to reach its strongest valuation since the United States and Israel initiated strikes against Iran on February 28.

Surging gold prices and a softening U.S. dollar provided a significant boost to the commodity-backed currency.

The rand gained approximately 0.8 per cent against the dollar by 1229 GMT, trading at 15.9925.

Gold, a key export for South Africa, surged to a three-month high on Friday and positioned itself for a third consecutive weekly gain.

Meanwhile, equity markets mirrored the currency’s positive trajectory, with the Johannesburg Stock Exchange Top-40 index climbing 2.2 per cent.
