Uganda’s King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV has died aged 34, decades after becoming the world’s youngest reigning monarch.

The Tooro Kingdom announced his death late Thursday, saying the king died at about 10:00 pm while receiving treatment in the United States.

“It is with profound sadness and a heavy heart that I announce the passing of His Majesty the Omukama of Tooro,” the kingdom’s prime minister said.

King Oyo became monarch at the age of three after his father died of a heart attack in 1995. He was formally crowned after turning 18, and last year Guinness World Records recognised him as the world’s youngest reigning monarch.

His death follows weeks of reports about his deteriorating health.

The Tooro Kingdom is one of several traditional kingdoms recognised by the Ugandan government.

The kingdoms have limited political power and mainly serve cultural and traditional roles.

The Tooro region in western Uganda has a population of about 2.1 million people.

Africa has three sovereign monarchies, Eswatini, Lesotho and Morocco, while several other countries recognise traditional kingdoms mainly as cultural institutions
