The Nigerian Government has expressed its condolences to China following devastating floods and landslides along the China-Nepal border, which killed more than 500 people and left hundreds injured.
The ministry, in a statement signed by its spokesperson, Oluwafemi Adeniyi, commiserated with the families of those killed, the injured, displaced people and communities whose homes and livelihoods were affected by the disaster.
The disaster caused extensive destruction in areas including Gyirong County in China’s Tibet Autonomous Region.
“The Government of Nigeria extends its heartfelt condolences and thoughts to the Government and people of the People’s Republic of China over the deadly impact of the disaster,” the statement said.
Chinese and Nepali nationals, as well as tourists from countries including Australia, India, Malaysia, the United Kingdom and the United States, were also affected.
The ministry commended the emergency response by Chinese authorities under President Xi Jinping’s leadership.
Nigeria also acknowledged progress in rescue operations, humanitarian assistance and support for affected communities.
“In this regard, Nigeria salutes the courage and altruism demonstrated by the Chinese first responders and rescue teams, whose tireless efforts continue to save lives and provide critical assistance to those affected by the disaster,” the statement said.
The Nigerian government expressed optimism that the resilience demonstrated during the rescue and recovery efforts would help affected communities recover from the disaster.
