Nigerian Afrogospel singer Gaise Baba has said mainstream recognition can give Afro-gospel artists greater access to spaces where they can influence culture.

He made the remarks on NewsCentral TV’s programme, Take 3, on Monday, during a discussion on “Gospel Music and Mainstream Recognition.”

Gaise Baba dismissed the idea that gospel artists are competing for mainstream awards, saying recognition does not define their worth.

“First of all, it’s not a fight. We’re not fighting for Headies or anything,” he said.

He argued that awarƙds and mainstream recognition can give gospel artists opportunities to enter influential spaces and reach wider audiences.

“However, you have more ground to influence culture when you get into the rooms that do the influencing,” he said.

The songwriter also stressed the difference between Afro-gospel artists and worship leaders, saying both serve the same faith but have different assignments.

He explained that while worship leaders focus on leading people in worship, Afro-gospel artists are called to take the gospel beyond the church into mainstream spaces.

“We have the same commander, the same, we’re from the same army, we’re in different platoons, different assignments,” he said.

According to Gaise Baba, Afro-gospel artists can use music, film, fashion and social media to spread the message of Christianity.

He said the mission is to take the gospel into spaces that may not ordinarily be reached through traditional church platforms.

“We’re going to take this gospel to the ends of the earth,” he said.
