The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) and the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) have introduced a one-off N4,000 fee for candidates seeking to verify their O’Level results for admission into Nigerian tertiary institutions.
Under the new arrangement, candidates whose admissions are processed through JAMB will verify their WAEC results once through JAMB’s Verification Service, after which the verification outcome will be made available to the relevant institution.
The bodies said the initiative is aimed at reducing the financial and administrative burden on admission seekers who previously had to pay for repeated verification of their academic credentials at different institutions.
In a joint statement signed by WAEC’s Head of Public Affairs, Moyosola Adesina, on Tuesday, JAMB and WAEC said the arrangement was designed to simplify the admission process, reduce unnecessary costs and protect the integrity of candidates’ academic records.
The N4,000 fee is to be paid only through the designated JAMB Verification Service platform. Candidates are not required to make the payment directly to tertiary institutions.
The institutions have also been directed to use the verified results provided by JAMB for admission screening, processing and other administrative purposes.
As a result, tertiary institutions are not permitted to charge candidates additional fees to verify the same WAEC result.
The new arrangement follows consultations and meetings between JAMB and WAEC to streamline O’Level result verification and reduce the logistical challenges faced by admission seekers.
WAEC has authorised JAMB to share verification outcomes with relevant tertiary institutions for admission-related purposes.
The bodies said candidates who successfully complete the verification of their WASSCE O’Level results through the JAMB platform will not need to repeat the exercise for the same result.
“This arrangement is designed to ensure that candidates who have successfully verified their WASSCE O’ Level result through the Verification Service platform will not be required to repeat the same verification exercise,” the bodies said
They added that candidates could complete the process from home or any location with internet access, reducing the need for repeated visits to tertiary institutions or JAMB-approved Computer-Based Test (CBT) centres.
JAMB and WAEC urged candidates to use the designated JAMB platform to complete their verification once, noting that the verified result would subsequently be made available to the institution where they are seeking admission.
