Somali pirates briefly hijacked a Saint Vincent and the Grenadines-flagged vessel off the coast of Yemen on Thursday, maritime security sources reported Saturday.
Six armed assailants boarded the MT Glamour roughly 38 nautical miles offshore after launching their boat from a village in Somalia’s Puntland region.
The crew acted swiftly by shutting down ship systems and securing themselves inside the vessel’s armoured citadel before the attackers could breach the area.
A Japanese warship and naval helicopters quickly approached the scene, forcing the pirates to abandon the ship and flee.
The incident marks part of a sharp resurgence in regional piracy, with at least 15 attacks recorded this year—the highest total since 2013.
Meanwhile, pirates released another hijacked cargo ship, the MV Sward, on Friday following a ransom payment, though four other captured tankers remain held off the Somali coast.
