Nigerian Artist Dunkwu Wins Emmy For Marvel

Nigerian artist Uzoma Dunkwu has won an Emmy Award for his character design work on Marvel Animation’s “Eyes of Wakanda”.

Dunkwu won the award for Outstanding Individual Achievement in Animation, Character Design. He was recognised for the episode “Into the Lion’s Den” from the Disney+ animated series.

The Television Academy announced him as one of the 2026 juried Emmy winners in August. The award was presented during the Creative Arts Emmy ceremonies in Los Angeles in September.

Unlike regular Emmy categories, juried awards are decided by panels of industry professionals. The panels can choose one, several or no winners in a category.

For Dunkwu, the award marks a major achievement in a career built largely in Lagos. He works as a visual development artist, character designer, animation director and educator.

Dunkwu did not begin his career with formal arts training. He studied electrical and electronics engineering at the University of Benin. However, he continued to develop his art skills independently. He later moved into comics, illustration, concept art and animation.

His portfolio now includes work for major entertainment companies such as Marvel, Netflix and Disney. IMDb also lists him as a character designer on Eyes of Wakanda, Iyanu and Iyanu: The Age of Wonders.

Dunkwu joined the production of Eyes of Wakanda in August 2021 as an early concept artist. He worked on the first character ideas under Todd Harris’s direction. He also developed early designs for five Dora Milaje characters, including Noni.

Those designs later helped guide character development across the series. Joshua James Shaw supervised the character designs. Dunkwu later refined Noni and contributed designs to all four episodes.

His work included characters such as Old Noni, Kuda, Tafari and High Councilman Rakim. He also designed an 1885 Wakandan Queen, Lion Captain, and several crowd characters. Dunkwu has also shared character design work from individual episodes of the series.

The Emmy-winning episode, “Into the Lion’s Den,” centres on a rogue Wakandan general known as the Lion. Eyes of Wakanda follows Wakandan warriors across different periods of history. They work to recover vibranium artefacts and protect Wakanda.

Dunkwu’s Emmy win highlights the growing impact of Nigerian creatives in global animation.
