Residents of Unguwar Mu’azu New Extension in Kaduna metropolis have raised an alarm over a suspected cattle-rustling operation by armed men believed to be bandits.

The incident occurred at about 11 pm on Saturday, September 19, 2026, when the suspected bandits reportedly entered the community and began moving cattle belonging to Fulani herders.

A resident, Saleh Usman, who witnessed the incident, said he first noticed the suspected bandits while he was out trying to buy bread.

According to him, he immediately alerted neighbours and urged those who were still outside to return home.

Usman said residents initially feared that the armed men had come to attack or abduct people in the area but later realised they were attempting to rustle cattle.

He said: “The bandits actually came to our Unguwar Mu’azu New Extension around 11 pm on September 19, 2026. I was the first person to see them when I was trying to buy bread.

“Immediately, I alerted my neighbours about what was going on so that if they were outside, they should go back home and wait until help came, not knowing they came to steal cows from their Fulani brothers.

“After a few minutes, while we were indoors, I heard them moving with the cows, and after a few minutes we began to hear heavy gunshots.”

Usman said residents were later informed that soldiers around Nariya had intercepted the suspected cattle rustlers.

Strengthen Security

He stressed that the attackers did not attempt to kidnap residents in the community. A community leader, Ismail Balarabe, called on the Kaduna State Government to take proactive measures to prevent a recurrence of the incident.

Balarabe urged the authorities to strengthen security around communities within the Kaduna metropolis, warning that residents should not have to live in fear of armed attacks.

Another resident, Mubarak Abdulsam, described the incident as “truly terrifying and sad”, particularly because it occurred within the metropolitan area.

“I received sad news about an attack on my community by bandits. The bandits were there to rustle cattle from the Fulani pastoralists who reside in Unguwar Mu’azu,” Abdulsam said.

“The good news is that they didn’t get what they came for, and, according to the sources, everyone is safe. Thanks to the NPF Kabala Division and other good Samaritans who helped repel the attack. We hope that this will be the last time such a thing happens.”

The incident has heightened concerns over the security of communities within Kaduna metropolis, with residents calling for increased surveillance and a more proactive security response to prevent further attacks.
