Peter Obi Calls for Better Facilities at Sokoto IDP Camp

Presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has called on the government to urgently improve living conditions for internally displaced persons at the Ramin Kura IDP Camp in Sokoto State.

Obi made the call after visiting the camp in Sokoto North Local Government Area on Monday, September 29, during a two-day visit to the state.

In a post on his X(formerly Twitter)  handle on Wednesday, Obi said the camp houses more than 1,000 internally displaced persons, many of whom are living in difficult conditions.

He said he was particularly concerned by the makeshift shelters and thatched rooms occupied by displaced families, noting that some rooms accommodate as many as 10 people.

Obi also identified inadequate toilet facilities, the absence of a primary healthcare centre and the lack of a basic school for children as some of the challenges facing residents.

He urged the government and relevant agencies to immediately address the pressing needs of the displaced persons while also tackling the security challenges that forced them to leave their homes.

Obi said he had consistently maintained that the continued presence of even one Nigerian in an IDP camp should be regarded as a collective national concern.

“I have always insisted that as long as even one Nigerian lives in an IDP camp, we are all internally displaced,” Obi said.

He added that temporary accommodation for displaced persons should be improved while efforts are heightened to create the security conditions needed for them to return to their ancestral homes.

According to Obi, the visit was his 12th to an IDP camp in Nigeria, and he pledged to continue supporting displaced Nigerians.

He also called on political office holders to spend their holidays within the country to gain a better understanding of the challenges confronting vulnerable Nigerians.

Obi attributed the conditions in the camps to what he described as a failure by government to prioritise critical areas of development and urged the authorities to provide better facilities and support for residents of the Ramin Kura camp.

He concluded by renewing his call for a “New Nigeria,” saying he remained convinced that such a country was possible.
