World No. 1 Jannik Sinner announced his withdrawal from the upcoming Shanghai Masters on Saturday as he continues to recover from a persistent right knee injury.
The 25-year-old Italian, who has won six titles in 2026 and holds a 44–3 record, has remained sidelined since capturing his Wimbledon title in July.
Following his recent retreat from the Beijing event, Sinner consulted a knee specialist in Lyon on Friday before confirming his absence from the October 7–18 tournament in Shanghai.

His prolonged hiatus significantly enhances Alexander Zverev’s chances of claiming the world No. 1 spot before the season ends.

Sinner must defend a vast accumulation of points from his 2025 titles in Beijing, Vienna, Paris, and Turin, putting his 1,370-point lead over Zverev at serious risk.
Having already secured the French Open and US Open titles in 2026 alongside strong runs at the Australian Open and Wimbledon, the 29-year-old German stands in a prime position to capitalise on Sinner’s absence and the final stretch of the season.
