US President Donald Trump has said Iran has “virtually given up” any plans to develop nuclear weapons, while claiming that oil prices are now falling after months of higher prices linked to the conflict between the United States, Israel and Iran.

Trump made the comments on Saturday as he left the White House for a rally in Ohio. His remarks came as the conflict with Iran entered its eighth month and Washington continued to focus on preventing Tehran from developing a nuclear weapon.

“By the way, Iran, as you know, has virtually given up any plans of a nuclear weapon,” Trump told reporters.

The US president also pointed to developments in the oil market, saying prices were declining after rising sharply following the US and Israeli strikes against Iran on February 28.

“Oil is coming down. Oil is right now lower,” Trump said, adding that prices were lower than they were during the administration of former President Joe Biden.

The conflict has placed significant pressure on energy markets, with disruptions affecting oil supplies and shipping routes in the Middle East. The Strait of Hormuz, a key route for global energy shipments, has also remained a major concern during the conflict.

Trump has repeatedly linked the US military campaign to efforts to prevent Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon. His latest statement, however, was presented as an assessment of Iran’s intentions rather than an announcement from Tehran that it had formally abandoned its nuclear programme.

Iran has consistently rejected allegations that it is seeking nuclear weapons. Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian reiterated that position during his visit to New York for the United Nations General Assembly last month, saying Tehran does not seek nuclear arms.

Pezeshkian also offered to dilute Iran’s enriched uranium stockpiles under international verification, while Tehran has maintained that it will not abandon its civilian nuclear programme or accept major concessions without the lifting of US economic sanctions.
