Iranian Oil Minister Mohsen Paknejad resigned from his cabinet post on Sunday, with state media reporting that National Iranian Oil Company CEO Hamid Bovard will step in as acting minister.

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian accepted Paknejad’s resignation without publicly stating a reason for the sudden departure.

Paknejad had led the ministry for the Organisation of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) as a member nation since August 2024.

His exit comes as the ongoing seven-month war between Iran and the United States exerts severe economic pressure on the country.

Shortly before news of his resignation broke, Paknejad maintained that state energy revenues remained intact, stating, “revenues of the oil that we have sold are still coming, and that will continue, God willing.”
