Al-Nassr forward Cristiano Ronaldo has broken his silence regarding his abrupt departure from the Portugal national team camp, explicitly accusing head coach Jorge Jesus of repeatedly breaking his word.
In a detailed statement released on Instagram, the 41-year-old captain shared his perspective on the breakdown in trust, stating he wanted to “recount, in the first person and directly, the circumstances surrounding the last training camp.”
The controversy stems from an agreed management plan following the 2026 World Cup. Federation president Pedro Proença and newly appointed coach Jorge Jesus both urged Ronaldo to stay.
According to Ronaldo, Jesus outlined a specific role for him, promising he would start the first and final matches while sitting out others for physical management.
Ronaldo initially rejected a proposal to skip road trips to Norway and Denmark, insisting that “the privilege of staying in Portugal would not be a good example” for a captain.
Tensions flared on the day of the Norway match when Jesus altered the agreed recovery schedule, asking Ronaldo if he could play 30 minutes.
Despite agreeing to the sudden change, Ronaldo watched the match slip away from the bench.

“I warmed up from half-time, watched the minutes go by, and was not called,” Ronaldo wrote.
“The coach had broken his word to me.”
He also took full responsibility for failing to greet fans after that match, calling it “a failure that is only my responsibility.”
The final rupture occurred following a private mediation meeting involving Al Nassr sporting director Simão Coutinho.
Although both parties drafted points for Jesus to address in a press conference, Ronaldo claimed the coach again veered off script.

“It was the second time that he was breaking the word he had given me,” Ronaldo stated. “I decided to leave the camp without waiting for any further breach of word.”
Ronaldo apologised to his teammates and fans, explicitly accepting that the federation should punish his walkout because “the rules are equal for everyone.”
However, he firmly rejected retiring through a ceremonial farewell match. Instead, he vowed to return once he serves his suspension, writing, “If I am physically well, playing at my club, scoring goals… I will be available, as I always have been until today, to compete and win for our National Team. This is, believe me, the purest of truths.”
