Manchester City manager Enzo Maresca has declared “absolute faith” that the club will overturn its guilty verdict for more than 100 breaches of Premier League financial rules, insisting the club’s trophy haul over the past 15 years remains untarnished.

Speaking on Friday in his first press conference since the verdict was announced last week, the Italian said he fully trusts the club’s leadership.

Maresca, appointed in June after previously serving on Pep Guardiola’s coaching staff at the Etihad, said that trust was the very reason he returned.

“There is not another club in the world where I would like to be,” he said.

An independent commission ruled that City arranged “sham” contracts with several commercial partners to artificially inflate revenues and cut costs by more than £900 million ($1.2 billion). The alleged breaches covered a nine-season period between 2009 and 2018.

The 10-time English champions continue to deny any wrongdoing and are appealing. If the verdict stands, City could face a severe points penalty, with relegation or even expulsion from the Premier League among the potential consequences.

Since the Abu Dhabi-backed takeover in 2008, City have dominated English football, winning eight Premier League titles and the Champions League, among other honours.

City travel to Liverpool on Sunday for their first match since the verdict, and a hostile reception at Anfield is expected. Maresca was unfazed, saying he became a manager for exactly this kind of occasion. His side have won all five Premier League games so far and sit top of the table.
