Novak Djokovic’s Shanghai Masters campaign ended in the second round on Friday after Hubert Hurkacz beat the Serbian star 6-4, 6-3 in straight sets, just days after Djokovic’s title run at the China Open.

The 2023 Shanghai champion and world No. 34 outplayed the 39-year-old in one hour and 28 minutes, using his big serve to control the match and hitting 13 aces.

The result was a disappointing one for the former world number one. Only three days earlier, Djokovic had claimed the 102nd professional title of his career in Beijing, where he has never lost a match. He could not carry that momentum into Shanghai.

Djokovic has struggled for fitness in recent months, and it showed on a cool Shanghai evening. He hunched over and squatted down between points, while Hurkacz moved sharply around the court.

The match turned in the fourth game of the second set, when Djokovic double-faulted to give Hurkacz a 3-1 lead. The Pole then held serve through to the end of the match.

The win was historic for Hurkacz. It was his first victory over Djokovic in nine meetings, and one of the biggest results of his season. Hurkacz moves into the third round of the Shanghai Masters, where he will face either Italy’s Lorenzo Musetti or Chinese wildcard Zhou Yi.

For Djokovic, the early exit adds to questions about his fitness as the season nears its end, even after his success in Beijing.
