Britain’s government has condemned the violent protests across France over the weekend, describing them as “unacceptable” and saying there has been no excuse for the violence.
The demonstrations took place on Saturday, when about 500,000 people took to the streets across France to protest against the rising cost of living.

The protests turned violent in several areas. Town halls and shops were looted and set on fire, causing widespread damage in some of France’s worst unrest in years.

“Clearly, the violence we’re seeing on the streets of France is unacceptable,” Prime Minister Andy Burnham’s official spokesman told reporters on Monday, according to AFP.
“While the power to protest is at the heart of democracy, this can never excuse violence,” the spokesman added.
Meanwhile, the British government has urged citizens in France worried about the unrest to follow local safety advice.
The spokesman said Britons concerned about the situation should “follow local advice from the authorities” as French officials continue to respond to the violence.
