French President Emmanuel Macron has scheduled a televised address for Sunday following violent protests that have led to clashes, arson and widespread looting across the country.

Macron’s office said the address would take place at 1800 GMT, after a meeting with several ministers at the Élysée Palace. The speech comes as France assesses the damage from Saturday’s demonstrations. Ministers have blamed “ultra-left” groups for the violence.

The protests erupted over rising living costs, including soaring fuel prices and higher inflation linked to the war in the Middle East. The conflict began in February when the United States and Israel attacked Iran.

The demonstrations also followed four weeks of high school student protests, some of which turned violent. The unrest comes six months before France holds an election to choose Macron’s successor.

Meanwhile, Macron is scheduled to begin a three-day visit to four Gulf Arab countries on Monday. The countries have been affected by the ongoing conflict in the Middle East.
