The Ogun State Police Command says it has neutralised a suspected armed robber and recovered two vehicles, a locally made pistol and other items following a foiled robbery attempt in the Onipanu area of Ado-Odo/Ota Local Government Area.

The police said operatives of the Onipanu Division, under the Ota Area Command, foiled the robbery in the early hours of Sunday, November 1, 2026, after responding to a distress call from a resident.

In a statement issued in Abeokuta, the state capital, the Police Public Relations Officer, Oluseyi Babaseyi, said the patrol team arrived at the scene in Ijaba, Iyesi, Ota, at about 1:45 am.

He explained that the suspects opened fire upon sighting the operatives, prompting the police to return fire.

“The ensuing exchange of gunfire resulted in the neutralisation of one suspect, while other gang members fled with suspected gunshot injuries,” Babaseyi said.

A search conducted after the encounter led to the recovery of a Nissan Almera and a Toyota Camry, alongside a locally made pistol and two live cartridges.

Other items suspected to have been stolen included HP and Dell laptops, a PlayStation console, four mobile phones, a Samsung television, a standing fan, a rechargeable radio, a Wi-Fi device, clothing, an OPay ATM card, a deck, two MP devices and other household items.

The police also recovered a Tecno mobile phone, three passport photographs, an MTN SIM pack, two National Identification Number (NIN) cards and cash from the deceased suspect.

Babaseyi said the command had launched a manhunt for the fleeing gang members, particularly those who might have sustained gunshot injuries during the encounter.

He added that investigations were ongoing to establish the ownership of the recovered vehicles and other exhibits, as well as determine their possible links to other criminal activities.

The Commissioner of Police, Bode Ojajuni, commended the operatives for their prompt response, professionalism and courage.

He reaffirmed the command’s commitment to intelligence-led policing, sustained patrols and rapid response to security concerns across the state.

The police urged residents to remain vigilant and report suspicious movements and activities, assuring them of the command’s commitment to protecting lives and property.
