President Bola Tinubu has declared that Abia State, along with several other regions of Nigeria, is beginning to reap the rewards of his administration’s decision to remove the fuel subsidy.
According to Tinubu, the controversial policy has empowered state governments to embark on major developmental initiatives that were previously hindered by financial constraints.
The President made this known on Friday during an official one-day visit to Abia State, represented by the Minister of Works, Dave Umahi.
It will be recalled that Tinubu, in his inaugural address on 29 May 2023, made the decisive announcement that “Subsidy is gone,” marking the end of Nigeria’s decades-long petrol subsidy regime. While the move sparked widespread debate and criticism over the lack of immediate cushioning measures, the administration has maintained that the decision was necessary for long-term economic growth.
Speaking on Tinubu’s behalf at the commissioning of several key projects — including the refurbished Dr Michael Okpara Auditorium and completed road networks — Umahi said the results of the president’s policy were now evident.
“The removal of the fuel subsidy is gaining momentum for projects, and we are beginning to see the benefits here in Abia State,” Umahi stated. “The same progress is being experienced in other states across Nigeria. I am committed to working with your governor to ensure that Abia State fully reclaims its potential,” he added.
