The Abia State Police Command has dismissed reports claiming that a bomb or Improvised Explosive Device (IED) was recovered at the United Evangelical Church in Ehere/Umuola, Ogbor Hill, Aba.

In a statement released on Tuesday, February 3, the Command’s Public Relations Officer, Maureen Chinaka, confirmed that investigations carried out by the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) for the area found no evidence of any explosive device.

She said, “I can authoritatively confirm that no bomb or explosive was recovered from the said area. Investigations conducted by the Command have clearly affirmed this.”

The incident occurred in connection with a road reconstruction project by the Abia State Government.

The church, which encroached on the road corridor, had been asked to adjust its structure to accommodate the project. When the directive was ignored, the military intervened to ensure compliance.

During the adjustment process, an iron rod, part of the church’s pillar, was removed by the military. The police emphasised that this object was not a bomb or any explosive and that no such device was recovered anywhere in Aba.

The Command reassured residents that it remains vigilant in protecting lives and property, with officers actively deployed across the state.

Initial reports had suggested a bomb scare on Monday, claiming that over 100 deaths were averted after the alleged discovery of a deadly object.

According to these reports, members of the United Evangelical Church had been digging near the fence around the parsonage when a large metal object was uncovered, which one member reportedly moved to a nearby borehole before the priest raised the alarm, suspecting it to be a bomb.
