The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, on Friday firmly defended the performance of security agencies in Abuja, asserting that the crime rate in the capital has been “drastically reduced.”
Speaking at a media chat in Abuja, Minister Wike challenged public perception—particularly within the media—that security challenges are spiking, urging a less “emotional” and more statistical approach to evaluating the situation.
“If you look at the statistics of the crimes in the city, are you telling me seriously that the rate of crime has not come down now in Abuja?” Wike questioned, maintaining that security agencies deserve appreciation for their efforts.
The minister specifically addressed the heavy media coverage of unfortunate incidents, referencing the death of an Arise TV staff member as an example.
He cautioned against using such individual tragedies to suggest a failure of the entire security architecture.
“All this you are saying because a colleague of yours is involved, and that means it is a spike. But if another person dies, you won’t worry about it,” he remarked.
He insisted that the responsibility to protect life and property is universal, regardless of the victim’s identity.
Wike conceded that crime cannot be entirely eradicated, comparing Abuja’s situation to global realities.
“All over the world, every day you wake up, crime is being committed here and there. But that does not mean that security agencies are not tackling it,” he concluded.
