Academic Staff Union of Universities Elects New President

Nigeria’s Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has chosen Prof. Chris Piwuna, a consultant psychiatrist at the University of Jos Teaching Hospital, as its new president.

Piwuna, who also serves as the Dean of Student Affairs at the University, succeeds Victor Osodeke, a Professor of Soil Science from the Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike, Abia State.

Piwuna was elected on Sunday at the 23rd National Delegates Congress of the Union in Benin. According to sources, the election contest was between Piwuna and Prof. Adamu Babayo from the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University in Bauchi.

Piwuna takes office amid speculation regarding potential industrial action, including concerns about brain drain and issues related to the government’s recently released distribution formula for Earned Academic Allowances.
