Tunji Disu officially assumed the role of Nigeria’s Acting Inspector-General of Police on Wednesday following his decoration by President Bola Tinubu.
Kayode Egbetokun, who had held the position since June 2023, stepped down on Tuesday, citing personal and family reasons. His departure opened the door for Disu to take charge at a time when the nation faces heightened security challenges.
Disu’s first task as Acting Inspector-General is to steer the police force through these critical times. His leadership comes at a pivotal moment, as security concerns remain a top priority for the government. The Nigerian police force is expected to focus on tackling rising violence, corruption, and public unrest under Disu’s direction.

Before his elevation, Disu served as Assistant Inspector-General of Police in charge of the Force Criminal Investigation Department (FCID) Annex in Alagbon, Lagos. He was promoted to the AIG rank in the previous year.
He had earlier served as Commissioner of Police in Rivers State and was later redeployed to Abuja as Commissioner of Police for the Federal Capital Territory under Egbetokun’s leadership.
A member of the International Association of Chiefs of Police, Disu also previously led the Nigeria Police Force’s Intelligence Response Team.
Born on April 13, 1966, in Lagos Island, he joined the police force in 1992 and has held several operational roles, including serving as a Divisional Police Officer in multiple locations across Ogun State, Ondo State, and Rivers State.
