The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has condemned the All Progressives Congress (APC) over a recent claim that there will be “no vacancy” in the presidency come 2027.
APC National Chairman, Professor Nentawe Yilwatda, had reassured party members that there would be “no vacancy in Aso Rock” during the next general election.
Reacting to the statement on Wednesday, ADC National Publicity Secretary, Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi, criticised the remark as arrogant, disrespectful, and undemocratic, stating that it reflects the ruling party’s disregard for the worsening economic conditions faced by millions of Nigerians.
“We understand why the APC is afraid and would prefer to avoid the inevitable judgment day at the ballot box. Periodic elections require every incumbent to renew their mandate. Whether the APC likes it or not, there will be a vacancy in the Presidential Villa in 2027,” Abdullahi said.
He emphasised that President Bola Tinubu must “reapply” to Nigerians for a second term and justify why he deserves to continue, despite “ruinous policies” that have made life difficult for the majority.
In a press statement titled “The APC Must Reapply to the Nigerian People in 2027”, Abdullahi described the APC’s position as presumptuous, insisting that political leadership is not a birthright but a privilege granted by the electorate based on trust and performance.
He said the ruling party’s rhetoric suggests that it may disregard the electorate’s voice and the sanctity of the ballot.
“To declare ‘no vacancy’ two years before an election is a slap in the face of every Nigerian who still believes in democracy. It mocks the suffering of families unable to feed, jobless graduates, and struggling business owners,” Abdullahi stated.
He added that in 2027, Nigerians will judge the APC and Tinubu based on key national indicators such as employment, security, poverty, power supply, and justice.
“No amount of propaganda can rewrite their report card in the eyes of the people. The APC will not mark their own scripts. Nigerians will,” the statement concluded.
