The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has condemned the recent attack on its secretariat in Ubima Community, Ikwerre Local Government Area of Rivers State.

Thugs attacked the party’s secretariat on Thursday night, shooting sporadically in the area and setting the secretariat ablaze, triggering tension ahead of the former Governor of Rivers State and Immediate past Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Ameachi’s visit to his hometown. Amaechi was said to travel to his hometown to validate his party’s registration.

The opposition party’s spokesperson, Bolaji Abdullahi, in a statement issued on Friday, described the attack as an assault on democracy, political tolerance, and the constitutional rights of Nigerians to freely associate and participate in the democratic process.

“This latest incident is part of a disturbing pattern of intimidation and violence against our party and its members. Just a few days ago, ADC members were shot at during a political gathering,” said Abdullahi.

“Those who believe they no can intimidate opposition parties through arson, violence, and criminal attacks should be reminded that those who choose violence should not assume others are incapable of defending themselves.”

This is the second time the ADC and its members have come under attack. Former presidential candidate Peter Obi, who is now a member of the ADC, was attacked by hoodlums alongside ADC chieftains in Edo State.

The former campaign spokesman and National Coordinator of the Obidient Movement Worldwide, Dr Yunusa Tanko, described the attack as an assassination. It resulted in a heated exchange of words between the ADC and the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), with the former accusing the latter of orchestrating the attack.

Citing the incident, Abdullahi said the ADC will not sit and watch as its members and facilities suffer attacks.

“While the ADC remains a peaceful and law-abiding democratic party committed to peaceful political engagement, we will not stand by and allow our members, supporters, and facilities to become easy targets for political thuggery,” the ADC spokesperson added.
