Nigeria’s Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, has tendered his resignation from President Bola Tinubu’s cabinet.

In a statement signed by the erstwhile power minister, he said he was resigning to pursue his political ambition as a gubernatorial candidate in the 2027 Oyo State gubernatorial election.

“I write with profound gratitude to Your Excellency to formally tender my resignation from my position as the Honourable Minister of Power, Federal Republic of Nigeria,” Adelabu wrote.

“I wish to sincerely thank Your Excellency for the confidence reposed in me and the opportunity given to serve our great nation under your administration. It has been a privilege to contribute to efforts to strengthen Nigeria’s power sector in line with your Renewed Hope Agenda.

“My decision to resign is to enable me to fully pursue my aspiration to contest for the office of Governor of Oyo State and to dedicate my time and resources to that endeavour.”

Adelabu has served as Nigeria’s Minister of Power since August 2023 under Tinubu.

Adelabu’s resignation comes a day after the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Tuggar, resigned from Tinubu’s cabinet.

Like Adelabu, Tuggar resigned to pursue his political ambition to run for governor of Bauchi State in the 2027 election.

Their resignation follows a directive issued earlier in March by Tinubu, instructing all political appointees with electoral ambitions to step down on or before 31 March 2026.
