The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has opened an investigation into incidents that occurred after two Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) quarter-final matches at the weekend, the governing body said on Monday.
The incidents followed Morocco’s victory over Cameroon in Rabat on Friday and Nigeria’s 2-0 win against Algeria in Agadir on Saturday.
After the match in Rabat, players from both teams were involved in pushing and jostling on the pitch. In Agadir, a video shared on social media showed Algerian players following the referee toward the tunnel after the final whistle. Separate footage showed confrontations involving journalists from Nigeria and Algeria in the mixed zone.
Algerian supporters also clashed with security personnel following the defeat to Nigeria.
In a statement, CAF said it had reviewed match reports and video footage and had referred the matter to its Disciplinary Board.
CAF added that disciplinary action would be taken if individuals were found to have breached regulations.
“CAF has collected recent match reports and video evidence indicating potentially unacceptable behaviour from some players and officials, and has opened an investigation into match incidents during the TotalEnergies CAF Africa Cup of Nations Morocco 2025 quarter-final fixtures between Cameroon and Morocco, as well as Algeria and Nigeria,” the statement said.

“CAF has referred the matters to the Disciplinary Board for investigation and has called for appropriate action to be taken if the identified persons were to be found guilty of any wrongdoing.
“CAF is also reviewing footage of an incident involving members of the media who allegedly misbehaved in the mixed zone area.
“CAF strongly condemns any inappropriate behaviour which occurs during matches, especially those targeting the refereeing team or match organizers. Appropriate actions will be sought against anyone whose behaviour is not consistent with professional conduct at CAF events.”
On Monday, the Algerian Football Federation said it had filed a complaint with the CAF regarding referee Issa Sy, who officiated the match against Nigeria.
“The Algerian Football Federation cannot ignore the refereeing performance observed during the last match, which raised numerous questions and caused considerable confusion,” it said in a statement.
“Certain decisions have damaged the credibility of African refereeing and do nothing to enhance the value of continental football on the international stage.”
