Manchester United’s Andre Onana earned a fourth clean sheet for Cameroon on Wednesday, helping his side secure a 0-0 draw against Namibia in the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers. Meanwhile, Equatorial Guinea and Ivory Coast confirmed their spots in the 2025 AFCON finals, bringing the total of qualified teams to nine.
Cameroon, without Brentford’s Bryan Mbeumo and Napoli’s Andre-Frank Zambo Anguissa, managed a stalemate against Namibia in Soweto. Despite Namibia’s 15 attempts on goal, they only managed one on target, with Onana’s solid performance seeing him concede just once across five qualifying games. Already qualified, Cameroon has 11 points and will wrap up their campaign with a home fixture against Zimbabwe on Tuesday.
In Group E, Equatorial Guinea’s qualification was assured after Liberia defeated Togo 1-0, with Mohammed Sangare scoring an 83rd-minute penalty. Despite Liberia’s win, they can’t surpass Equatorial Guinea, who beat them twice in head-to-head encounters. Equatorial Guinea will now look forward to their third consecutive AFCON appearance.
In Group G, defending champions Ivory Coast also qualified, with a 1-1 draw between Chad and Sierra Leone in Abidjan securing their place. Zambia can clinch the group’s second spot if they beat Ivory Coast on Friday, though a draw or loss would keep Sierra Leone in contention.
Before this week’s qualifiers, Algeria, Angola, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, DR Congo, Egypt, and Senegal had already booked their spots, while Morocco automatically qualifies as hosts.
Elsewhere, Sudan will face Niger on Thursday and could qualify at Ghana’s expense if they avoid defeat, adding further tension to an already thrilling qualifying stage.
