The 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco has recorded unprecedented spectator turnout, crossing the one-million mark before the tournament reaches its final stages.

According to figures cited by Moroccan French-language outlet 360, a total of 1,116,959 fans have attended matches across the nine stadiums used for the 35th edition of the competition, which runs from December 21 to January 18.

The milestone was reached at the conclusion of the quarter-finals on Saturday, January 10, marking the highest attendance figure in AFCON history.

Organisers expect the number to rise further with the remaining fixtures, including the semi-finals between Morocco and Nigeria in Rabat and Egypt against Senegal in Tangier, the third-place playoff in Casablanca, and the final scheduled for January 18 at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium in Rabat.

Matches involving the host nation, Morocco’s Atlas Lions, have consistently been played before sold-out crowds at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Sports Complex, while several other fixtures also recorded impressive turnouts.

More than 40,000 spectators were in attendance for Egypt’s clash with South Africa at the Adrar Stadium in Agadir.

In Marrakech, the Ivory Coast-Cameroon encounter attracted over 35,000 fans, while 41,672 supporters watched Senegal face the Democratic Republic of Congo at the Grand Stadium of Tangier.

The Algeria-Nigeria quarter-final in Marrakech, which ended in a 2-0 victory for the Super Eagles and Algeria’s elimination, drew 32,452 spectators.

Beyond attendance figures, the tournament has also matched a major scoring milestone, with 119 goals already recorded, equal to the total number scored during the entire previous AFCON edition.
