The Indian city of Ahmedabad has been officially chosen to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games, organisers confirmed on Wednesday.

The decision was approved during the Commonwealth Sport General Assembly meeting in Glasgow, following a formal recommendation by the organisation’s executive board.

India’s Commonwealth Games Association president, Dr PT Usha, described the announcement as a major honour, saying the event would mark 100 years since the Games were first held and would also serve as a platform to shape the future of the competition.

She added that the 2030 edition will unite athletes and communities from across member nations while celebrating diversity, sport, and shared progress.

Ahmedabad, located in the western state of Gujarat, is a flagship city for Prime Minister Narendra Modi and is home to the world’s largest cricket stadium, which seats more than 130,000 spectators.

The venue is expected to play a central role during the Games.

India is also positioning itself as a future Olympic host, having submitted a formal expression of interest to the International Olympic Committee to stage the 2036 Summer Olympics.

The Commonwealth Games faced uncertainty last year after the Australian state of Victoria withdrew as host of the 2026 edition due to rising costs.

Glasgow later stepped in to organise a scaled-down version, meaning the UK will host consecutive Games after staging the 2022 event in Birmingham.

Questions have also been raised in recent years about the relevance of the Commonwealth Games, as global and continental competitions have grown in prominence.

The Games are limited to countries that form part of the Commonwealth, many of which were formerly under British rule.

However, the president of Commonwealth Sport insisted the movement remains strong, pointing to growing international interest in hosting future editions from 2034 onwards.

He said India brings youthful energy, major infrastructure, deep sporting culture and a vast audience, which would help drive the next phase of the Games’ development.

The 2030 tournament will mark a century since the inaugural Commonwealth Games took place in Hamilton, Canada, in 1930.
