Senate President Godswill Akpabio has strongly condemned the recent attack on Yelewata, Benue State, labelling the killing of innocent civilians “an act of terrorism”.
Speaking during Wednesday’s plenary session, Akpabio voiced deep concern over the brutal nature of the assault and warned that the violence may carry political undertones.
“I hope this is not politically motivated,” he said, urging swift identification and prosecution of the perpetrators.
The Senate also launched an investigation into the killing of twelve travellers from Zaria, Kaduna State, who were en route to a wedding in Plateau State. The victims were murdered in Mangu District, Mangu Local Government Area, on Saturday.
The move followed a motion tabled by Senator Khalid Mustapha (Kaduna ).
In its resolution, the Senate condemned the killings, observed a minute’s silence for the victims, and directed its committees on national security, defence, and police affairs to conduct a thorough probe and recommend further action.
The Senate also called on the Inspector General of Police to ensure the immediate arrest and prosecution of those responsible for the Mangu massacre.
