Nigeria’s Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), George Akume, has said that the challenges facing Nigeria did not begin with the current administration, and that President Bola Tinubu has launched bold reforms to address them.
Akume made the remarks on Sunday during a special service to mark Nigeria’s 65th Independence Day at the National Ecumenical Centre in Abuja.
He stressed that every Nigerian has a vital role to play in building the nation, saying, “Each Nigerian has a role in building the Nigeria that we deserve.”
The SGF reaffirmed President Bola Tinubu’s commitment to transforming the country, highlighting some of the key reforms already underway, including the removal of fuel subsidies.
“The President needs the support of every Nigerian,” Akume said. “What President Tinubu is doing today could have been done 39 years ago. But I believe that there is light at the end of the tunnel.”
He also called for stronger cooperation among the three arms of government — the Executive, Legislature, and Judiciary — emphasising that such collaboration is essential for national progress.
Akume noted that Independence Day is not only a celebration of Nigeria’s liberation from colonial rule but also an opportunity to honour the country’s founding fathers who fought for its freedom.
