Algeria defeated co-hosts Uganda with a decisive 3-0 victory on Monday in their first African Nations Championships (CHAN) Group C match.

The loss makes Uganda the only host nation to lose its opening game, as Tanzania and Kenya both won their initial matches over the weekend.

The first goal came before halftime when Ayoub Ghezala scored with a header from an Abderrahmane Meziane cross.

Meziane, who was named man of the match, then scored himself in the 76th minute with a left-footed curler from the edge of the box.

Just three minutes later, Sofiane Bayazid sealed the win for the “Desert Foxes” with a well-placed shot following a one-two pass.

Uganda had two good chances but failed to capitalise, as the Algerian goalkeeper saved long-range efforts from Joel Ssrunjogi and Patrick Kakande.

In the other Group C match, Guinea beat Niger 1-0 in a game that involved several VAR decisions.

Teenage striker Mohammed Bangoura scored the only goal just two minutes into the second half after the video assistant referee overturned an initial offside call. Uganda will face Guinea in their next match.
