Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson Becker has urged his teammates to create their own history as comparisons with the club’s last Premier League-winning side resurface.
Under manager Arne Slot, Liverpool currently lead the Premier League by six points over second-placed Arsenal, with a game in hand. The Reds are on track to secure their first league title since 2020, boasting 13 wins and just one loss from their opening 17 matches.
With fans debating whether this team rivals the legendary squad that ended Liverpool’s 30-year title drought under Jürgen Klopp, Alisson insists the focus should remain on the present.
“I don’t think it’s too similar—two different teams,” said Alisson, one of the few players remaining from Klopp’s historic squad. “A few players still play in the team, but we have a different style now—more ball possession. Before, it was really straightforward: lots of transition and intensity.”
Alisson fondly recalled the achievements of Klopp’s side, which included the Champions League triumph in 2019 and the Premier League title in 2020. However, he stressed the importance of looking ahead.
“I believe we don’t have to compare ourselves with teams from the past,” the Brazilian said. “We have to create our own history. The things we did in the past were really special and will always be part of this club’s history.”
Eight members of the 20-man squad for Liverpool’s 3-1 Boxing Day victory over Leicester were part of the title-winning team from four years ago. Among them, only Mohamed Salah remains from the iconic front three that included Sadio Mané and Roberto Firmino.
Now, Salah has been joined by Cody Gakpo, Luis Díaz, and Darwin Núñez to form a dynamic and effective forward line under Slot’s leadership. Alisson praised the impact of the new arrivals and the determination shown by players who are yet to experience title success with Liverpool.
“We have the quality to do something special,” Alisson remarked. “The commitment, the passion, and the desire are all there. We are hungry and want to win every game in front of us. That’s all we’re focused on at the moment.”
With the season entering a critical phase, Liverpool fans will hope their team can channel this hunger into reclaiming the Premier League crown.
