Amorim Calls for Change After Manchester United Collapse to Brentford

Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim admitted major changes are needed at Old Trafford following a chaotic 4-3 defeat to Brentford on Sunday that further highlighted the club’s ongoing struggles.

United fell behind after Kevin Schade struck twice at the Gtech Community Stadium, extending their winless run in the Premier League to six matches.

Despite taking the lead through Mason Mount’s first goal for the club, United’s youthful side, fielding one of the youngest starting XIs in league history, collapsed under pressure.

Amorim, who made eight changes following United’s midweek Europa League semi-final win over Athletic Bilbao, saw his experimental side crumble defensively. With an average age of 22 years and 270 days, the lineup couldn’t withstand Brentford’s intensity.

Since replacing Erik ten Hag in November, Amorim has found it difficult to reverse United’s fortunes. The club now sits 15th in the table and is flirting with its worst league finish since relegation in 1974.

Reflecting on the performance, Amorim said, “It summed up our season. We started well and had control, but we suffered on set-pieces and throw-ins—something we expected. The players must realise this can’t continue. We’re aware of the season’s context, and we must make changes.”

United were 2-1 down at the break following a Luke Shaw own goal and Schade’s first. Schade headed home a second from Bryan Mbeumo’s cross before Yoane Wissa added a fourth for the hosts, exploiting United’s defensive frailties.

Late goals from Alejandro Garnacho and Amad Diallo added some respectability to the scoreline, but the damage had long been done.

Amorim did, however, take encouragement from Mount’s display, praising the midfielder’s intelligence and drive.

“It wasn’t just about the goal—his positioning, ability to get into the box, and intelligence stood out,” Amorim said.

“He trains incredibly hard—sometimes too hard. I have to hold him back. He’s desperate for more minutes, and I’m pleased with him.”
