Amorim Faces Scrutiny After Grimsby Shock

Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim admitted “something has to change” after his side suffered one of the most humiliating defeats in the club’s modern history, crashing out of the League Cup to fourth-tier Grimsby.

United, who came from 2-0 down to force a 2-2 draw, were beaten 12-11 on penalties in Wednesday’s tie — their first exit at the hands of a League Two side since Sir Alex Ferguson’s retirement in 2013. The result deepens the crisis surrounding Amorim, who was brought in to turn the tide after last season’s 15th-place Premier League finish.

The Portuguese coach, backed with more than £200 million in summer signings including Bryan Mbeumo, Matheus Cunha and Benjamin Sesko, admitted he was short of answers after the shock defeat. “I think something has to change,” Amorim told the BBC. “The way we started, without intensity, we were completely lost. Tonight the better team won — the only team on the pitch.”

Amorim, the sixth permanent manager since Ferguson’s departure, has been criticised for sticking rigidly to his 3-4-3 system. His record now stands at 19 defeats and just 17 wins in 10 months in charge, with United still searching for their first victory of the new season after three matches.

Defender Diogo Dalot echoed his manager’s concerns, admitting the team lacked fight. “I think we gave the game to them straight away — duels, second balls, set-pieces. We fought back, but that was the minimum. Clearly, it wasn’t good enough,” he told MUTV.

Despite the mounting pressure, Amorim received unexpected backing from Grimsby boss David Artell, who insisted the United manager deserves patience. “Ruben Amorim needs time. He’s an excellent manager, and you don’t get this job without proving yourself. If given the chance, he will get it right,” Artell said.

United now prepare for a crucial Premier League clash at Old Trafford against Burnley on Saturday. Another defeat could leave Amorim fighting for his future.
