Manchester United’s manager, Ruben Amorim, declared after the club’s Europa League final defeat to Tottenham that he is willing to step down immediately without seeking any compensation if the club no longer wants him as manager.
Despite the crushing 1-0 loss in Bilbao, which capped a disastrous season for the Red Devils, Amorim remains committed to his approach but acknowledged he would walk away if asked.
Brennan Johnson’s late first-half goal was enough to seal the victory for Spurs, leaving a toothless United unable to respond.
The defeat compounds a season that has seen the club slump to their lowest league finish since their relegation in 1974. With just one Premier League game remaining against Aston Villa, United sit 16th in the table.
The former Sporting Lisbon coach, who replaced Erik ten Hag in November, has managed only six league wins during his tenure.
Yet Amorim spoke candidly about his future, saying he will not resign on his own accord but will leave immediately without any compensation if the board or fans decide he is not the right man.
“If the board and the fans feel that I’m not the right guy, I will go the next day without any conversation about compensation,” Amorim said emotionally. “But I will not quit. I’m confident in my job. And as you can see, I will not change anything in the way I do things.”
He declined to discuss long-term plans, insisting the focus must be on coming to terms with the painful loss. “What I can say is that I think it was clear we were the better team, but then we managed not to score again, and it is hard to win football matches, but the guys tried everything to win the game,” he said. “In the future, we will have time to assess everything.”
When Amorim took charge, United were close to challenging for Champions League qualification. Now, they lie 27 points behind fifth-placed Chelsea and face a season without European competition for the first time since 2014/15.
“We need to understand that it is tough for a club like ours not to be in the Champions League,” Amorim acknowledged. “But we have to use the other side. If we have more time, we have more time to think, to work during the week, and to be better in the Premier League. That will be our focus.”
