The Nigerian Society of Anaesthetists (NSA) has called for its involvement in the Lagos State Government’s investigation into alleged medical negligence surrounding the death of Chimamanda Adichie’s son.

The call was made by the NSA’s National President, Prof. Alhassan Mohammed, in a statement obtained on Monday.

Mohammed welcomed the state government’s decision to probe the incident and said the society was encouraged by the Health Facility Monitoring and Accreditation Agency (HEFAMAA) ‘s move to commence an investigation following directives from Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu.

Mohammed said the alleged medical negligence appears to have centred on the Physician Anaesthetist, who is a member of the team that performed the procedure to facilitate the MRI.

“In this regard, the NSA recommends very strongly that a senior and experienced Physician Anaesthetist should be co-opted into the investigative panel for a comprehensive review of the incident,” Mohammed said.

“This incident is a sad one indeed but we have an opportunity to reflect on the practice of Anaesthesia in Lagos State and Nigeria by diligently implementing the recommendations of the investigative panel.”

The child, 21-month-old Nkanu Nnamdi, died on January 7, 2026, after a brief illness. Adichie has accused Euracare Multispecialist Hospital of negligence leading to her son’s death and has served the hospital with a legal notice alleging medical negligence and professional misconduct.

Following the allegations, Governor Sanwo-Olu, through his Special Adviser on Health, Dr Kemi Ogunyemi, ordered an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the child’s death.

The Lagos State Government said anyone found culpable of negligence, professional misconduct or regulatory breaches would be held accountable in line with existing laws and regulations.
