Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou has defended his recent tongue-in-cheek comment comparing the pressures of managing in the Premier League to being a UK Prime Minister, insisting it was not meant to be taken seriously.
Earlier this month, Ange Postecoglou remarked that football managers face “an election every weekend,” unlike Prime Ministers who go to the polls every four or five years. However, ahead of Spurs’ Premier League clash with Wolves on Sunday, the Australian clarified his statement.
“Can I just say that obviously sarcasm and irony is lost in this country if people actually believe I was serious,” Postecoglou, 59, told reporters on Friday. “There are far more difficult jobs than being a football manager or even being a Prime Minister.”
Tottenham’s recent struggles on the pitch have done little to lighten the mood. A 1-0 loss to Nottingham Forest on Thursday followed a 6-3 thrashing at home to Liverpool, leaving Spurs languishing in 11th place in the Premier League.

Despite the poor run of form, Postecoglou remains optimistic and feels supported by the Tottenham faithful. “They love their football club and want it to succeed. I haven’t felt anything but support since I’ve been here,” he said. “I’ll keep doing what I think is the right thing to bring success to this football club.”
Spurs’ injury crisis has deepened, with Ben Davies suffering a setback in training, potentially leaving the team without a recognised centre-back for the Wolves fixture. Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven are already sidelined, while Radu Dragusin limped off against Forest with an ankle injury.
To compound matters, full-back Djed Spence received a second yellow card on his return to Nottingham, further limiting Postecoglou’s defensive options.
Speaking on Dragusin’s injury, Postecoglou said, “It’s a bit early to tell. He tweaked his ankle and felt he couldn’t continue. We’ll have to wait and see.”
Spurs, still competing on four fronts, are hoping to turn their season around and end a 16-year trophy drought, with Postecoglou’s second-season success record hanging in the balance.
