Anthony Joshua’s uncle has questioned whether prosecuting the driver involved in a crash that injured the boxer and killed two passengers is “really worth it”.
Court proceedings began on Tuesday in Ogun State against Adeniyi Mobolaji Kayode, who was driving Joshua when their Lexus SUV collided with a stationary truck on the Lagos–Ibadan Motorway on December 29, 2025.
Two passengers, Latif Ayodele and Sina Ghami, were killed in the crash.
Joshua and Kayode sustained minor injuries and were taken to the hospital, where Joshua was later discharged.
Speaking at the family home, Joshua’s uncle, Adedamola Joshua, said the family was relieved that the boxer survived and questioned the value of taking the case to trial.
“We are very lucky that our son didn’t die. But taking this man to court is something we don’t see any reason for,” Adedamola Joshua told AFP.

He described the incident as an accident and said he did not see a clear reason for pursuing legal action.
“This is my own personal opinion that the trial is not really worth it. Because we think accidents can happen anywhere in the world,” he added.
He said that “we sense the opinion of the people of the town is that this man must be prosecuted. That he was over speeding”.
The hearing was adjourned until February 25 after prosecutors requested more time.
Adedamola Joshua told AFP that Kayode had been his nephew’s driver for three years and there had never been any complaints.
