The Rivers State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has rejected the impeachment process initiated against Governor Siminalayi Fubara, warning that the move could destabilise the state and damage the party’s public image.
The party’s reaction followed reports that the Rivers State House of Assembly commenced impeachment proceedings against Fubara on Thursday over alleged misconduct.
Lawmakers accused Fubara of failing to present the state budget to the House, of spending public funds without legislative approval, and of withholding salaries and statutory allocations intended for the House of Assembly, the Clerk, and the Assembly Service Commission.
Reacting in a statement on Thursday, APC spokesperson in Rivers State, Darlington Nwauju, said the party was alarmed by the “unfortunate developments” emanating from the Rivers State House of Assembly.
“Our position as at today is that we solemnly reject the impeachment process against our governor and his deputy,” APC declared.
APC cautioned against the resurgence of internal political crises, warning that unresolved disputes from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) era should not be imported into the APC-led government.

“It will be totally untenable for our party to keep quiet when an obvious hangover from strifes that occurred within the PDP are allowed to resurface in our great party.”
According to the party, the impeachment threat appears to be linked to budgetary concerns, which it said were already addressed during the period of emergency rule.
APC noted that a ₦1.485 trillion budget was transmitted by the President to the National Assembly in May 2025 and approved by both chambers, with spending provisions extending to August 2026.
It argued that the constitution allows a governor to operate within a six-month spending window into a new fiscal year, making the impeachment process unnecessary.
APC also called on members of the Rivers State House of Assembly, particularly lawmakers elected on the party’s platform, to resist external pressures aimed at destabilising the current administration.
“Let it be known that our party will do everything possible to ensure that the APC-led government in Rivers State is not destabilised through fratricidal disagreements,” the statement said.
The party urged the immediate discontinuation of the impeachment process, warning that it could undermine governance, stall development, and drag the party’s image “into the mud”.
“Let Rivers State remain a democracy and not a politicocracy,” the APC said.
