Arsenal Beat Ipswich Without Saka to Climb to Second in Premier League

Arsenal managed a narrow 1-0 victory over struggling Ipswich on Friday to move into second place in the Premier League, closing Liverpool’s lead at the top to six points.

Kai Havertz’s solitary goal was enough to secure the win, but Arsenal’s lack of finishing prowess raised questions about their title credentials. Despite dominating possession, Mikel Arteta’s side failed to convert their control into a more comfortable scoreline.

The Gunners are adjusting to life without Bukayo Saka, who faces a lengthy spell on the sidelines due to a hamstring injury. Gabriel Martinelli filled Saka’s position on the right wing, while Gabriel Jesus led the line after a prolific run of five goals in two matches.

Arteta acknowledged the need for improvement despite the victory, saying: “Frustration when you win? No. Things to improve? Yes. Credit to them as they’re very well-organised, but we restricted them to nothing.”

Havertz netted his 12th goal of the season in the 23rd minute, converting Leandro Trossard’s low cross with a powerful finish. Arsenal had further opportunities to extend their lead, with Gabriel Magalhaes heading against the post and Gabriel Jesus seeing a cheeky finish ruled out for offside.

Arsenal captain Martin Odegaard provided a scare by appearing to re-injure his ankle but quickly recovered to create several chances. However, Ipswich’s defensive resolve, bolstered by goalkeeper Arijanet Muric’s heroics, kept the game within reach.

The win allowed Arsenal to leapfrog Nottingham Forest and Chelsea into second place. Ipswich, however, remain in relegation trouble, sitting second from bottom, three points adrift of safety.

Elsewhere, Brighton’s winless streak extended to six matches with a 0-0 draw against Brentford. The Seagulls remain two points above their opponents in the standings, but Brentford’s second away point of the season nudged them into 11th place, ahead of Tottenham.
