Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta insists he has no regrets over his side’s season despite falling short of silverware once again, as the Gunners prepare to host Newcastle in their final home game of the Premier League campaign.
Arteta’s team, who had been Liverpool’s closest title challengers for most of the season, have faltered in recent weeks with just one win from their last six matches, including a Champions League semi-final exit at the hands of Paris Saint-Germain.
Despite the disappointing end to a promising campaign, Arteta praised his squad for what he described as a “phenomenal” season, particularly given the injury setbacks and stiff competition.
“You probably have regrets in life and in anything you do professionally when you haven’t done your best,” Arteta said on Friday. “But I can guarantee we have all tried our very best. If you ask if we wanted a different outcome, then the answer is yes. But that doesn’t take away from what this team has achieved.”
Arsenal currently sit second in the table ahead of third-placed Newcastle, who visit the Emirates on Sunday. A defeat would see Eddie Howe’s side leapfrog the Gunners with just one game left to play.
Nonetheless, both clubs are on course to finish in the top five and secure Champions League football for next season.
Arteta acknowledged the importance of finishing as strongly as possible. “The dream of winning the Premier League this season is gone,” he admitted. “So we have to be the best of the rest and use that pain to push us to be better.”
He added, “This is our chance to secure Champions League qualification, fight for second place, and show our appreciation to the fans for their support throughout an amazing season.”
Arteta also confirmed that a late decision would be made regarding the availability of forward Kai Havertz, who has been sidelined since early February.
Newcastle have already beaten Arsenal three times this season—once in the league and in both legs of the League Cup semi-finals—making Sunday’s clash a potential grudge match as Arsenal look to restore some pride and seal a strong finish.
