A collision between a minibus taxi and a haulage truck resulted in the deaths of 17 individuals in northeastern Zimbabwe on Tuesday, according to police reports.
Police spokesperson Paul Nyathi said that all 17 fatalities, including a few pedestrians, occurred at the crash site, which took place near Chitungwiza, a heavily populated area approximately 25 kilometres southeast of Harare, the capital city.
Nyathi explained that the truck crossed into oncoming traffic and collided with the minibus after the driver lost control. Before the crash, the truck hit two pedestrians who were walking on the roadside’s central island.
Fifteen of the 17 minibus passengers died on the spot, while others suffered injuries and were taken to a hospital for treatment.
The state-run Herald newspaper reported that the minibus was “entirely crushed, with only remnants of its chassis visible beneath the truck’s undercarriage.”
Twisted metal, broken glass, and other debris were scattered across the road as emergency responders worked to free passengers who were trapped, the newspaper noted. Although the incident occurred in the morning, rescuers were still recovering bodies at noon, it added.
