Atletico Madrid secured an emphatic 5-2 victory over La Liga leaders Real Madrid on Saturday, shattering their rivals’ perfect start to the season in a thrilling derby at the Metropolitano stadium.
The dominant win, featuring two goals from Julian Alvarez and a late strike from Antoine Griezmann, provisionally moved Atletico up to fourth place.
The match was an exhilarating back-and-forth in the first half.
Atletico took the initial lead through Robin Le Normand. Real Madrid quickly responded with goals from Kylian Mbappe and Arda Guler to go in front. However, Alexander Sorloth levelled the score just before halftime, setting the stage for the second-half rout.

Alvarez was the star after the break, first converting a penalty given for a foul by Guler, and then bending home a free-kick past goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois to put Atletico firmly in control.
Griezmann added the fifth goal late on to seal the crucial victory.
Despite the win, Alvarez acknowledged that the team still needs to “improve the things that need to be improved,” but praised the result as a much-needed boost after a shaky start to their campaign.
