The African Union has condemned the suicide bombings that hit Maiduguri, Borno State, on Monday night, which killed 23 people and injured over 100 others.
In a statement on Wednesday, the AU Commission Chairperson, Mahmoud Youssouf, said the Union strongly condemns the attacks and expressed full solidarity with the Nigerian government and people, offering condolences to the families of the victims and wishing a speedy recovery for those injured.
He emphasised that the AU firmly rejects all forms of violence by terrorist and extremist groups against civilians and security personnel, describing such acts as serious violations of human rights that undermine peace, security, and stability in affected communities.

Youssouf commended Nigerian authorities for their ongoing efforts to counter terrorism and improve security in Maiduguri, while noting that the attacks show the persistent threat of terrorism and the need for continued vigilance and resilience.
He called on the international community “to scale up support to Nigeria and the Lake Chad Basin region at large, including through enhanced humanitarian assistance, capacity-building, intelligence-sharing, and sustained investment in stabilisation and development initiatives aimed at addressing the root causes of violent extremism.”
The AU stressed that lasting peace and effective counter-terrorism require a collective approach involving society, strengthened cooperation, and sustained commitment, reaffirming its unwavering support to Nigeria in promoting peace and stability.
