Nigeria has recorded major diplomatic gains at the 39th Session of the Executive Council of the African Union(AU), including securing a permanent seat on the Board of the African Central Bank.
In a statement issued by the country’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Tuggar, the Nigerian government said the development reinforces Nigeria’s leadership role in advancing Africa’s economic integration, peace, security and democratic governance.
The decision extends Nigeria’s presence to the Board of the Technical Convergence Committee of the African Monetary Institute, the body tasked with laying the groundwork for the establishment of the continental bank.

According to the statement, the development reflects Nigeria’s technical expertise, economic weight and commitment to Africa’s monetary integration agenda.
On peace and security, candidates endorsed by the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) were successfully elected to the Peace and Security Council. The outcome was described as demonstrating strong unity and cooperation among West African states, as well as their shared resolve to promote stability and collective security across the continent.
Nigeria also hosted a Ministerial High-Level Panel Discussion on Regional Partnerships for Democracy, which drew ministers, senior officials, and delegates from across Africa and the wider international community. The forum focused on strengthening democratic institutions, promoting inclusive governance and enhancing regional collaboration to sustain democratic values.
The government further stated that Nigeria remains committed to working closely with member states and regional bodies to promote shared prosperity and sustainable development across Africa.
