Australia and Indonesia have substantively concluded negotiations on a new bilateral security treaty that focuses on closer military cooperation.
Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto announced the agreement in Sydney.
The pact, which builds upon a 2024 defence deal, commits the two nations to regular high-level consultation and mutual support if either country’s security is threatened.

While Australia is closely allied with the US in deterring China’s growing influence, Indonesia has pursued a more neutral geopolitical course.
The treaty aims to secure peace and stability in the Asia-Pacific region by encouraging the neighbours to “act together.”
