Niger State Governor Umaru Bago has expressed deep sorrow over the tanker explosion that claimed several lives in Essa, Katcha Local Government Area, describing the incident as tragic and avoidable.
In a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Bologi Ibrahim, the governor said the disaster was “worrisome, unfortunate, and deeply saddening.”
“This is yet another painful and tragic incident for the people and the state government,” Bago said, offering prayers for the repose of the deceased and wishing the injured a speedy recovery.
The governor lamented that, despite continuous public sensitisation on the dangers of scooping fuel from fallen tankers, some individuals still engage in the risky act.
“It is disheartening that people still rush to collect fuel from crashed tankers despite repeated warnings. Life should be valued, no matter the hardship,” he said.
Bago commended the Niger State Emergency Management Agency (NSEMA) for its prompt response and assured that the state government, through relevant ministries and agencies, would support the victims and their families.
The explosion occurred on Tuesday after a tanker crashed in Essa community, resulting in multiple deaths and injuries. The wounded victims were taken to the Federal Medical Centre, Bida, for treatment.
