More than 30 people were killed and several others abducted in a bandit attack on Dutse Dan Ajiya village in the Anka Local Government Area of Zamfara State, according to local residents and officials.

The attackers reportedly arrived on motorcycles late Thursday, blocked the village entrances, and opened fire, targeting residents who tried to flee. Several villagers remain missing following the raid.

“After blocking all the roads, the bandits started to shoot at sight, and the villagers ran helter-skelter,” a resident recounts.

Governor Dauda Lawal directed Deputy Governor Mani Mumuni to visit the community and convey condolences to affected families.

Police have not yet released an official statement on the incident.

Zamfara is among the northwestern Nigerian states that frequently experience attacks by armed groups. Other recent attacks in the region, including in Kebbi State, have also resulted in deaths and destruction of property.

Local lawmaker Hamisu Faru, who stated that the attack claimed 50 lives, claimed that “the bandits came from Gando forest. They laid siege on Dutse Dan Ajiya and opened indiscriminate fire, killing any resident who tried to flee.”
